Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher recounted his falling out with Larry David on Monday after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House for a dinner last year.

In an interview with The New York Times Magazine, Maher discussed how David was “so outraged” by his meeting with Trump that he penned an essay in The New York Times titled, “My Dinner With Adolf,” adding that the two men’s relationship had yet to recover.

Jerry Seinfeld also reportedly weighed in, adding both Maher and David “both got kind of bugged out,” following the White House dinner, which was organized by Kid Rock.

Maher initially viewed his meeting with Trump as an attempt to infiltrate the president’s inner circle.

“It’s an administration of ‘people are saying,’” Maher told NYT Magazine. “If that’s how the president gets his information, then be one of the people saying things.”

However, just 12 days after the meeting with Trump, Maher appeared on his HBO show “Real Time” to offer words of praise for the president — a move that shocked his personal friends.

Maher told viewers Trump was both “gracious and measured,” while adding the president was more down-to-earth in private than the “crazy person” he seems to be in public.

However, Maher added that “it doesn’t matter who he is in a private dinner with a comedian — it matters who he is on the world stage.”

His generous description of Trump reportedly ruffled feathers within his inner circle, such as actor Sean Penn, who “didn’t understand” Maher’s emphasis on the president’s likeability.

The uncharacteristic words of praise from Maher were short-lived, however, with the podcast host calling Trump’s first 100 days back in office “probably 100 things to legitimately hate.”

Earlier this year, Trump declared the dinner to be a “total waste of time,” while labeling Maher a “jerk and a “highly overrated lightweight.” Maher also touched on his perceived annoyance of other high-profile comedians, following several spars with celebrities on the national stage.

After Maher reportedly blasted comedian Dave Chappelle for his comments directed at free speech at the 2025 Riyadh Comedy Festival, Chappelle offered some harsh words for the host.

“I’m so f—— tired of his little smug, cracker-a– commentary,” Chappelle reportedly said in his Netflix special, in response to Maher’s criticism.

However, not all of Maher’s colleagues reportedly offered harsh criticisms.

Louis C.K. previously referred to Maher as “allergic to bulls—,” adding that he “doesn’t need you to think he’s a good guy — but he is,” according to the Times.

Fox News Digital reached out to Maher and David for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
