The NBA’s human battering ram just called it a career.
Russell Westbrook made it official Wednesday, walking away after 18 seasons of anger-fueled basketball.
The 37-year-old broke the news with a farewell video on X narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan, punctuated by an ice-cold caption: “Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end. You had to be there. And now it’s over.”

In today’s load-managed NBA, Russ was a violent throwback. He attacked the rim like it owed him money and played every possession with the urgency of a man trying to run through a brick wall.
No coasting. Just 100% Westbrook, every damn night. You can hate the jumper, the turnovers and the chaos. Good luck arguing with the résumé.
Westbrook walks away as the undisputed Triple-Double King with 209, blowing past Oscar Robertson’s once-unthinkable record of 181. And that’s hardly the whole trophy case: nine All-Star appearances, nine All-NBA selections, two scoring titles, the 2017 MVP and a spot on the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.
Nothing captured the Brodie Experience quite like 2016-17. Kevin Durant skipped town for the Golden State juggernaut, Oklahoma City was left for dead and Russ responded by going completely nuclear. That season, Westbrook averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1962 to average a triple-double for an entire season. He won the MVP — then averaged a triple-double three more times.

Was it always pretty? Not even close. Russ could brick a wild bank shot, cough up the ball in crunch time and make fans want to launch their remotes through the TV. But he never cheated you on effort.
His 18-year NBA odyssey stretched from Oklahoma City to Houston, Washington, both sides of L.A., Denver and finally Sacramento. And at 37, Russ still had something left in the tank, starting 58 of 64 games for the Kings while averaging 15.2 points and 6.7 assists.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, both Sacramento and Washington were asking him to sign on for another run. Russ said no thanks, choosing to shut the door on his own clock.
The Lakers years turned Russ into basketball’s piñata. Every bad shot and turnover became fresh meat for debate TV as the LeBron-Anthony Davis-Westbrook experiment spectacularly combusted.
Westbrook leaves the game 14th on the all-time scoring list (27,176 points) and fifth in assists (10,351), to go along with 9,025 rebounds and 2,038 steals.
Love the chaos or hate the field-goal percentage, you couldn’t turn the channel when Russell Westbrook had the ball.
The league has plenty of stars. It just lost one of its last true psychos.
