WWE’s Rey Mysterio reflects on Triplemania involvement, says he’s unfazed going into match with 7-foot-3 giant

LAS VEGAS – Before the 619 became a widely known finishing move, before Rey Mysterio became a WWE champion and the superstar he is today, he was getting his first opportunities in the ring at AAA.

Mysterio took part in the first-ever Triplemania event in 1993. At the time, he was known as Rey Misterio Jr. and he teamed up with Volador and Misterioso to take on Tony Arce, Vulcano and Rocco Valente – known as Los Destructores. More than three decades later, AAA is a part of WWE, Mysterio is the general manager of AAA and he’s in the main event of Triplemania 34 Night 1 in Las Vegas.

“It’s a very special moment for me in so many ways,” he told OutKick Dropkick. “The fact that I’m now the new GM of AAA. The fact that AAA was the first company that opened the doors for me and I was at the very first AAA show back in ’92. I was at the very first Triplemania in ’93. So, to see this come full circle and to be in the position where I’m at now, it’s been an amazing ride, man.

“A lot of tasks at hand but I’ve been able to manage and control certain things to a certain extent. Obviously, things got out of control a little bit when I decided to jump on top of Omos and create this match we have tonight here for the first Triplemania in Las Vegas, which is also very special. We are, in the first time ever in the history of AAA, we’re doing a first-time, two-night Triplemania event. The one tonight here in Las Vegas and in two different countries and then Sunday in Mexico City.”

Mysterio’s rivalry with the 7-foot-3 giant Omos will seemingly come to an end on Friday night. He was forced to suspend Omos after he injured Galeno and attacked Mysterio in August. Omos showed up to Ola de Color as a paid spectator and attacked Mysterio again, with the help of Dominik Mysterio.

Over the course of his career, Mysterio has slayed many beasts. He’s conquered mountains more than once. It’s why going up against Omos isn’t doing much to make him worried.

“I’ve felt his power. Very strong dude. Very intimidating,” he said of Omos. “But it doesn’t faze me. I’ve seen giants before. I was just saying a minute ago, from the moment I started training at 8 years old, I was the smallest kid in the class. The youngest kid after me was probably 16, 17. They were obviously much bigger than me. I’ve always been in the ring with bigger people, bigger opponents, so, it doesn’t faze me. I’m not scared. I’m motivated. I’m antsy to step in the ring and I’m looking forward to tonight.

“As a GM, I need to make a statement that no superstar or Luchador in the AAA locker room is going to try to intimidate me as the GM for AAA. And they have to know their boundaries and they have to not step over those boundaries and respect authority. In this case, this is what I had to do for Omos to respect some authority.”

If Mysterio loses, Omos will be reinstated to the AAA roster. Should he win, Omos will never be allowed to compete in AAA again.

Rey Mysterio returns during Monday Night RAW at Rio Rancho Event Center.

Triplemania 34 Night 1 takes place at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Friday night. Night 2 is set for Sunday at Arena CDMX. The events begin at 10 p.m. ET and can be seen on YouTube.
