Jack Wolf Gunstock Locked and Loaded

Later this month will see the release of the Jack Wolf Knives Gunstock. This is the most faithful iteration of the popular traditional knife pattern that Jack Wolf has produced yet.

You have to appreciate the etymology of the Gunstock. Sometimes traditional knives take their names from obscure tidbits of history, like the Wharncliffe, or from some of the…less savory aspects of the working man’s life (spey blade anyone?), but the when they named this pattern, they looked at it and said, “It looks like the stock of a gun. Let’s call it the Gunstock.” Done and dusted. Jack Wolf has certainly operated in the Gunstockian space before, specifically with the Gunslinger Jack, but this is the first time they’ve not rechristened the pattern, or really, tweaked it much at all – other than the usual high Jack Wolf polish and quirky, cool material choices.

The smooth yellow bone option certainly makes an impression

The blade on Jack Wolf’s Gunstock lands with the comfortable, EDC-friendly length of 2.97 inches. Historical Gunstocks come in various blade shapes, and sometimes even with multiple blades, but Jack Wolf stuck to its single blade philosophy with this one and chose a clip point blade which jibes with the rugged frontiersman feel of the Gunstock handle shape, of which more anon. This entire batch of Gunstocks is releasing under Jack Wolf’s budget-conscious Gateway series, and thus the steel is 14C28N – a staple stainless choice for any manufacturer looking to deliver admirable performance without sending the final price skyward.

It’s interesting that a handle patterned after the stock of a rifle fits the hand so nicely, but it’s true. The recessed forward grip and flared out back end provide two anchoring points for the four fingers, while the ever-so-slightly arched topside gives the thumb multiple places to post up. There are a whopping eight different cover material options for the Gunstock, including smooth yellow bone and ruby red linen Micarta. All variants weight around 2.3 oz., all have a stainless steel bolster, and all are bearing the federal-style shield inlay on the show side.

The Jack Wolf Gunstock will be available on Friday the 13th (spooky!).
